Kind Paths

Kind Paths

Mother’s advice that’s stood the test of time:
in order to fix a bike,
flip it upside-down. Then
you can see the fantasy
peeled from reality –
the wheels stopped turning;
brakes squealed.

With your lover, feel the tyres.
Remove all nails and glass
and shards of resentment.
Refill with care. Ride the paths
of kindness, and take it in turns
ringing the bell.
